Wild Turkey Cocktail Recipes – Tax Day Edition

Last week I received an email from the fine folks at Wild Turkey that contained not only some Wild Turkey cocktail recipes, but also the following opening line.

Legendary whiskey aficionado Benjamin Franklin once said, “The only things certain in life are death and taxes.” On Tax Day, sit back and enjoy what Uncle Sam simply can’t touch – the smooth taste of bourbon, courtesy of a delicious Wild Turkey bourbon cocktail.

Now . . .  if you owe the government money just have Wild Turkey 101 on the rocks.

Those who know their bourbon history realize that Uncle Sam has always had their hand on bourbon – especially when it comes to taxes. In fact, unless I remember this wrong, up to 50% of a bottle of bourbon’s cost is actually attributed to taxes. That’s a pretty steep tax charge in my opinion but my love for bourbon keeps me coming back for more. The irony of course is that Uncle Sam helped to protect bourbon by making it America’s only native spirit and putting in place some pretty strict rules about how it’s made.

So on this tax day, as many of us bitch and moan about the government taking an ever increasing slice of our pie, let’s put the issues aside and raise our glasses to America’s one, and only, native spirit.

The Dark Knight, Wild Turkey & Jimmy Russell

About a week or so ago I was fortunate enough to attend a Wild Turkey tasting dinner at Blood and Sand, a St. Louis dining club. The dinner was absolutely amazing. Each course was paired with a different cocktail featuring one of Wild Turkey’s bourbons or ryes.  After 4 stunning courses of food I had consumed at least 5 cocktails with a healthy dose of whiskey in each. To say that I was enjoying myself would be an understatement.

The Dark Knight, Wild Turkey & Jimmy Russell

Despite how good the food was it wasn’t my favorite part of the evening. The best part was that we were joined by the legend himself, Jimmy Russell. That’s right folks. Jimmy was in St. Louis for a few days promoting Wild Turkey and we were lucky enough to have him join us for dinner. He kicked things off with a little history about bourbon and Wild Turkey and then mingled with all of us throughout dinner. But it got even better.

After dinner, Jimmy brought all of us to the bar where we were invited to sample any of the Wild Turkey products we wanted with Jimmy himself just hanging out and pouring glass after glass. Talk about an amazing end to a fantastic dining experience. The final icing on the cake was getting my photo taken with Jimmy. Perfect end to a perfect day.

It was great to meet Jimmy in person and it makes me even more excited about him leading our tour and tasting at Wild Turkey in October for the 2012 Bourbon & Banter Pilgrimage. Jimmy is a true Kentucky gentleman and just hanging around him will make your smarter about bourbon and might just elevate your enjoyment of the drink as well. I hope you are planning to join us in the fall. You can learn more about the trip right here.

To thank Jimmy and Wild Turkey for such an amazing evening I thought I’d share their recipe for the Gotham Chill. It was created to help celebrate the release of The Dark Night Rises. It’s a little more complex than your typical bourbon cocktail but just like the Dark Night himself – complex is good.

Gotham Chill Cocktail

1 oz Wild Turkey® 101
¾ oz Ruby Port

2 dashes of Orange Bitters

Call For July 4th Bourbon Cocktails

Today is the last day of the work week for me as I was lucky enough to get a few days off at they July 4h holiday. I’m working on some major projects for the blog and I hope that a few days off will allow me to focus on them a bit more than usual. I suppose there’s the chance that I’ll loose focus once the bourbon starts to flow this evening but I guess that’s not a bad thing either.

Before things go off the rails I’d like to know what bourbon concoctions you have planned for your July 4th holiday. I realize that many of you only drink your bourbon straight but for those of you who enjoy mixing things up what drink is on your menu for tomorrow?

Please post your July 4th bourbon cocktail recipe in the comments section and I’ll pick one out from the group to make for myself and my bourbon-fearing wife and then write a review of the recipe and let you know if it made a dent in her bourbon wall of resistance.

And for those of you going it straight tomorrow let me know if you’re opening up something special to celebrate American Independence.

Cheers!
