Basil Hayden’s 10 Year Bourbon Review – 2020 Release

The initial mellow flavors hit on the traditional notes of caramel, vanilla, rye spice and oak but I found the taste thin and fleeting. After my initial tasting notes, I added a few drops of water (as per usual review practice) – this was a mistake; most flavors became non-existent and I felt like I was left with flavored water. I would love to see this as a 10 year, cask strength expression… although I would hate to see the MSRP if that were to ever happen.

There is an old saying that goes: there is no use in crying over spilled milk and fallen bourbon rickhouses. Okay, so I may have taken artistic liberties with the latter half of the saying but you’ll see where I am going with this.

You might recall that in July of 2018 there was a tragic incident in Bardstown, Ky. when a certain warehouse collapsed, in two stages, sending thousands of barrels tumbling down several floors to the hard ground; many falling to their demise. Many, but not all.

Coppercraft Straight Rye Whiskey Review

This was my favorite of the three Coppercraft whiskies we reviewed. The nose was quite inviting and there should be no doubt you have a rye whiskey in your glass. I got the impression from that initial nosing that the first sip would be sweeter than it actually was, but when you consider a 95% rye mash bill, with the remaining ingredient being barley, as opposed to corn, the fact that it wasn’t should come as no surprise. That’s not a knock on the palate, but more of a nod to the nose.

And while those outings are almost certainly rites of passage for visitors to the Bluegrass state, there are many new and cool options to check out as well. Thanks to the Bourbon Boom of recent years, downtown Louisville is hopping with many distilleries that have opened brand-specific fronts on Whiskey Row. Jefferson’s Presidential Select 16 Year Old Review

With a Straight Kentucky Bourbon label and a 16 year age statement, the latest release from Jefferson’s is sourced from one of Kentucky’s bigger, established distilleries. The first Presidential release in several years, this is an 11-year bourbon aged in #3 charred barrels then dumped for a second barreling, again in #3 charred barrels, to mature for another five years.
