1955 Old Fitzgerald Bourbon Review
I wrote this review because I wanted to share this experience with the Bourbon & Banter readers. This was a bottle that most people will never see in their life. I know that it was an extremely rare treat.
BOTTLE DETAILS
- DISTILLER: Stitzel-Weller
- MASH BILL: Wheated mash bill
- AGE: 6 Years
- YEAR: 1955
- PROOF: 100 (50% ABV)
Brent's NOTES
NOSE: Light and aromatic with hints of oak and sweetness. You can tell it’s a wheated. Butterscotch, Dark Fruit, Root Beer
TASTE: LOTS of Oak, Pepper/Spice, Creamy Vanilla
FINISH: Barely a finish to speak of when you don’t give it a solid Kentucky chew. Goes down extremely smooth with almost zero alcohol heat or burn. Kentucky chew is where this one opened up and showed some character. Lots of spice/pepper on the tip of your tongue. A hint of creamy vanilla on the back of your palate during the finish. I also picked up a bit of dark fruit (raisins or dates) on the finish.
SHARE WITH: Good friends and people who know and can appreciate this bourbon and the history that goes along with it.
WORTH THE PRICE: There are plenty of people that would easily pay hundreds if not much more for a 70+-year-old sealed Stitzel-Weller 100 proof Old Fitzgerald.
BOTTLE, BAR OR BUST: Bottle without a doubt. But good luck finding a unicorn like this.
OVERALL: For sure the more time I had with it, the better it got. I do n’t know if my palate just got used to it or what, but my second glass was much better than the first one. Very thin legs. Beautiful caramel color with a great mouthfeel. I thought this would be very thin in the mouth, but it was surprisingly viscous. Was this the best bourbon that I’ve ever had in my life? No, it wasn’t. It was damn good, but being able to share it with others and enjoy the experience made it an incredibly memorable bottle.
Make no mistake, this was a very special bottle, and I was extremely fortunate to be a part of the consumption of it. I want to thank Josh Mason of Beverage Enthusiast for providing this bottle from his personal collection and for letting me share this experience with him and a great group of friends.
