Riverset Straight Rye Whiskey Review

The mashbill is misleading as 95% rye typically produces much more evergreen than sweet aromatics. The mouthfeel and sweetness causes this to drink much more like a bourbon than a rye. It’s more viscous and full-bodied than similar high rye whiskies.

MATT'S NOTES

NOSE:  Red Apple | Clove | Honey

TASTE:  Vanilla | Anise | Tobacco Leaf

FINISH: Slow burn in the front, Oak party in the back

SHARE WITH: Bourbon fans that don't typically drink rye whiskey

WORTH THE PRICE: At $30, this is a bottle that pairs nicely with the bourbon product as solid well rye whiskey for the home bar.

BOTTLE, BAR OR BUST: Bottle. This is a rye whiskey that can drink neat or form a solid base for a cocktail.

OVERALL: The mashbill is misleading as 95% rye typically produces much more evergreen than sweet aromatics.  The mouthfeel and sweetness causes this to drink much more like a bourbon than a rye.  It's more viscous and full-bodied than similar high rye whiskies.  If you are into a standard rye whiskey profile this is not for you; but if you love  good bourbon and typically stay away from rye whiskey this may be a gateway pour for you.

"Riverset Rye is rich in flavor with hints of cinnamon, allspice, and vanilla blended with notes of brown sugar and dark fruits. Riverset Rye is great in cocktails but smooth enough for neat sipping.

We age our barrels along the winding bluffs of the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tennessee. The Delta heat and humidity provided by the long, hot summers cook our barrels low and slow like proper Memphis BBQ. This forces the whiskey deep into the oak, creating an unmistakably rich flavor.

Riverset is named in honor of the Mississippi River and the iconic riverboats that have long since navigated its waters.  Historically, these riverboats were used to transport cumbersome barrels of whiskey from the hinterlands to the cities. In fact, so much whiskey was transported on the river in the nineteenth century that the Mississippi became known as the 'Whiskey River.' "
