Rampur Double Cask Whisky Review

In full disclosure, I haven’t had the opportunity to sample a lot of Indian Single Malts. To date, my exposure has been to a few expressions from Paul John, which I felt were quite good. In comparison, I found this Rampur Double Cask promising. The nose was fruity and full of heavy malt aromas.

POPS' REVIEW OF RAMPUR DOUBLE CASK WHISKY

SHARE WITH: This is a bottle to be shared with those looking to move beyond their bourbon comfort zone or with Scotch/Irish fans that are willing to acknowledge there are worthy single malts beyond those countries' shores.

WORTH THE PRICE: At $79.99 SRP I find this one to be a bit pricey when you compare it to other quality Indian Single Malts available in the market like Paul John's Brilliance.

BOTTLE, BAR OR BUST: If you're just looking to #DrinkCurious, try it at a bar first. If you're committed to learning more about Indian Single Malts and have the funds, a bottle purchase may just be in order. I certainly wouldn't object to having a full bottle around to share with friends as an introduction to Indian whisky.

OVERALL: In full disclosure, I haven't had the opportunity to sample a lot of Indian Single Malts. To date, my exposure has been to a few expressions from Paul John which I felt were quite good. In comparison, I found this Rampur Double Cask not quite as good, but very promising. The nose was fruity and full of heavy malt aromas. The oak swiftly registered and the resulting spice notes were a bit aggressive and overpowered the lighter fruity notes.

As with the nose, the palate started with light fruity flavors but the oak once again took over blending spice and malty flavors in a way that muted the fruit. If I could dial back the oak and malt 1-2 notches this would be more enjoyable. That said, this is a lovely whisky and one that shows how Rampur continues to evolve and grow as they release new expressions into the market.

At the end of the day, those with limited funds should enjoy this at a bar and hold off adding a bottle to their collection until they've tasted it and decided if it deserves their hard-earned cash.
