Hard Truth Mizunara-Finished Wheated Bourbon dazzles and delights
Just another great release from Hard Truth. That this distillery, without any bourbon heritage or family distiller history just keeps on cranking out great bottle after great bottle never ceases to amaze.

TASTING NOTES
NOSE: The distiller's notes say "nougat," and that's undeniable. Three Musketeers bar is front and center, along with a touch of white chocolate. The rest is clean and uncomplicated whiskey in which no single grain seeks the spotlight nor competes with the wood.
PALATE: This is really well balanced between sweetness (caramel and raspberry cream), proof (bold, walks you right to the heat edge when sipped neat, and punches strongly in cocktails) and spice (lively at cask strength, a good dose of cinnamon red hots). It then eases into the fresh plum, dried cherry and floral notes common to mizunara oak. The body is lean, but neither surprisingly nor disappointingly so for a younger wheated bourbon. It's a good mouthfeel for that age and especially so for a finished whiskey.
FINISH: Clean, lean and short, which I kinda dig because it isn't complicated by overbearing toasted oak (for me, that's a bright sawn cedar note). That eliminates the threat of palate fatigue from over-spicing or oak, and that leaves it nimble.
Reviewer's Verdict
RATING: Bottle. Unlike amburana, it seems that distillers figured out how to 1. use mizunara oak positively or 2. figured out that they can't screw it up. It's a great wood that seemingly can do no wrong to a good American whiskey.
WORTH THE PRICE: Yes. It's well made (like every Hard Truth whiskey), this is a value in a market still laden with overhyped and overpriced 5-year-old brown spirits.
WHO IT'S FOR: Whiskey drinkers who've zeroed in on the virtues of mizunara-kissed American whiskies, and all fans of Hard Truth (and especially that brand's cult following. Surely that following is the envy of many other brands. Go to a launch party there sometime [HT's events are par excellence] and see the crowds gathered. I met people from six non-Indiana states who drove there for its 7-year, three-whiskey release party this past spring.) As a wheated bourbon finished in mizunara, it's also a novelty worth trying. A quick web search turned up only Hard Truth's release, and it's only a 24 barrel batch, so supplies are limited.
REVIEWER'S VERDICT: There's nothing to be surprised about here. Just another great release from Hard Truth. That this distillery, without any bourbon heritage or family distiller history just keeps on cranking out great bottle after great bottle never ceases to amaze. So go get it, enjoy it, share it. I love wheated bourbons in a gold rush, and as I finish writing this at 7 p.m., I say I and my wife have earned one.

About Our Rating System
Bourbon & Banter uses a three-tier rating system created over a decade ago: Bottle, Bar, or Bust.
- ๐พ Bottle โ Buy it. This one deserves a place in your cabinet. (Approximate equivalent: 85 and above on a 100-point scale)
- ๐ฅ Bar โ Worth trying, but not necessarily worth owning. Find it at a bar before committing to a bottle. (Approximate equivalent: 70โ84)
- ๐ Bust โ Skip it. Life is too short and your shelf space too valuable. (Approximate equivalent: below 70)
Numeric scores imply a precision that doesn't exist โ and most publications never score below 80, making half the scale meaningless. We'd rather answer the question that actually matters: buy it, try it at a bar before you buy, or skip it. The approximate equivalents above are for reference only.

STEVE'S NOTES
SHARE WITH: Fans of Mizunara oak-finished whiskies. I mean, who isn't a fan of that wood these days? Of all the oak cask finishes available now, if there's a bad Mizunara one, I've not had it or heard it mentioned. Seems this pricey and very old Japanese oak is loved by all who taste its impact on whiskey.
WORTH THE PRICE: Yes. It's great whiskey.
