Replay: BITB Live Tasting #21
October’s Blind Drinkers session was a four-pour night, and the bottle that was supposed to steal the show finished dead last. Not on my scorecard alone. Every person at the table had it at the bottom.
The opener had one of the best noses of the night, then fell apart on the back end. Randy, in his first session with us, called it young before anybody else did. Strong debut.
Samples two and three ran as a set. Most of the table figured out they were related, and the room split right down the middle on which one was better. When the argument is over which good bottle you like more, that’s a pretty good night.
Then came the closer. Older, pricier, and carrying a story on the label. Rick nailed the proof and missed the age by a mile. The nose was a brute, the palate wanted to go somewhere sweet and never got there, and water only made it worse. I’ll be honest, I hadn’t tasted it before the session, and I was shocked.
That’s the whole point of drinking blind. An expensive limited release doesn’t get a pass because of what’s on the label, and a bottle at less than half the price gets a fair shot at beating it. Tonight it did. Twice.
Catch the full replay to see how it all shook out.
