TASTING NOTES

NOSE: This Exceptionally Aged 15 Years is beautifully floral and fruity and lightly funky; a mash up of overripe tropical fruit, Luden's cough drops, well-aged bourbon and baked molasses cookies. When I poured my wife a taste, the glass was 18 inches from her nose before she said, "Gosh, this smells delicious!"

PALATE: Super rich and decadent, a liquid dessert of boozy flamed cherries and vanilla extract, molten bittersweet chocolate, dark raw honey and charred oak. Incredibly well blended, round and perfectly proofed at 86.

FINISH: Fruity, long, velvety and just barely drying. Drink this with others to ensure you don't drink too much of it. This is when sharing is not just kind, but wise.

RATING: Bottle. Do not pass this up if you find it.

WORTH THE PRICE: Without a doubt.

WHO IT'S FOR: In the Bourbon & Banter Discord channel, cocktail discussions have really heated up in 2026, and rum is often the focus. So, it's definitely for those who DrinkCurious, and for run fans in general, of course. But brown spirits fans who want something other than whiskey should seek it out.

REVIEWER'S VERDICT: Marketing copy on this spirit shows this is made in a country where blenders are revered. From the news release: "Exceptionally Aged 15 began with former Master Blender Jerry Edwards, who distilled the rum on a single column still and matured it in ex-American oak bourbon casks. Stewardship later passed to former Master Blender Allen Smith and current Master Blender Trudiann Branker, who finalized the blend in 2025 to create a distinctly Mount Gay 15-year-old rum."

I love such stories of proud heritage and mentorship, which are sometimes overlooked. But at Mount Gay, whose distilling heritage stretches back an amazing 320 years, they acknowledge their roots. Skilled blending like this is underrated in America, though that's changing–but not fast enough. When I was a chef, it was one thing to source great ingredients and another to cook them well. But to blend it with correct techniques and seasoning ... those were marks of experience and a good palate. I can taste those generations of knowledge here.

TASTING NOTES

NOSE: Potently spicy due to all those years lazing about in oak, but not overly woody. It's still floral and fruity after all these years, and still bordering on breakfast pastry notes more than toasted wood; still exhaling overripe apples, slow-roasted figs and tropical flowers.

PALATE: Find me an American whiskey–at least one that won't cost you four figures–that's this old and this fruity, candied and bound tight as a corset in vanilla, overripe pear and candied ginger–and costs only $199. This is the epitome of what old spirits taste like, that King of Kentucky cough drop candy; that ground-too-long-ago cinnamon that's just holding onto the last of its enticing aromas; that dried orange peel and ground clove ... all of it. For $199, it's a steal.

FINISH: A little espresso, oak and bitter cocoa that, despite those drying flavors, makes for a surprisingly complementary trio. Sure, it is a little drying–what spirit wouldn't be after 25 years in wood? But it's not bitterly so. Fear not ye who've been puckered up by Garrison Bros. whiskies, a lot of fruit and a little funk are still in play here alongside pleasant medicinal notes interlaced with raisins.

Reviewer's Verdict

RATING: Bottle. And maybe bottles if you have the cash. It's 25-freakin' years old and this amazingly good. There must be lessons to learn in Barbados for whiskey makers around the world. Go there for the rum, and enjoy the heavenly weather and culture while you're there.

WORTH THE PRICE: Yes, definitely. The $200 range isn't where I typically shop, but compared to what other 25-year-old spirits cost, this is is beyond a bargain. If I ever find this, it will be worth the sacrificing the purchase of something else to lay hold of a bottle of this.

WHO IT'S FOR: Rum drinkers, of course, but as mentioned above, any adventurous brown spirits drinker should love this. How could you not like this ideal balance of oak and fruit and molasses–especially at this price and age–if you like brown spirits?

REVIEWER'S VERDICT: Again, to the news release for reference: Exceptionally Aged 25 was distilled in 1999 on a single column still under Master Blender Jerry Edwards and aged exclusively in ex-American oak bourbon casks for 25 years. Allen Smith oversaw much of its maturation before Master Blender Trudiann Branker crafted the final expression, resulting in a rare rum shaped by three generations of Mount Gay expertise.

“The Exceptionally Aged Collection is a tribute to more than 320 years of Mount Gay heritage and to the generations of blenders before me who had the vision to lay down these incredible rums,” said Branker. “By aging both expressions exclusively in ex-bourbon casks, we were able to achieve an intensity and complexity that truly reflects our heritage, Barbados’ tropical climate, and the character of the spirit straight from the barrel.”

Think about that: Edwards was distilling this spirit the summer as the world was wringing its hands over what would happen if the Y2K changeover rocked our appliance clocks and computers into disastrous cycles of not-reboot-able doom. That's a long time ago. For me, that's my now-mature adult child ago. (He, like me, slept through all of that.) And as I noted above, when you read that, don't you just want to meet these distillers and blenders and talk about the "intensity and complexity" they sought to achieve in these spirits?

Find this. Buy this. Simple as that.
